Work progressing at town's water plant

An out-of-state contractor continues to work on a two-phase project at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

Bellinger Howell LLC of South Carolina continues to remove a 300-acre tree farm that included 26 underground lines and will convert the land into a Bermuda grass crop site.

Phase two involves work on the plant’s inflow and infiltration system.

The $5 million project is needed to have a state-mandated moratorium lifted, which prevents the town from taking on either new commerical businesses or residential structures.

The moratorium has been in effect since 2015.

Town Manager Jammie Royall said treatment plant personnel and others are keeping a watchful eye on the work underway.

“I think we came to a good mutual agreement after we had the meetings with the contractor,” Royall said.
