Town needs $2.5 million for new firehouse

Town officials continue to seek funding from federal and state agencies for construction of the new Mount Olive Fire Department.

Completed architectural drawings depict more than double the station’s current square footage and include six drive-thru bays for trucks.

A Community Development Block Grant for $2.5 million has been committed to the town. However, the town must match the remaining $2.5 million to begin construction of the new firehouse on a six-acre tract of land near Carver Elementary School.

Jammie Royall, town manager, said the MOFD is similar to the new town of Seven Springs facility on N.C. Hwy 55 East.

Once built, the new MOFD should meet the town’s needs for the next half century. The current fire department on Northwest Center Street is “bursting at the seams.”
