Spring Creek prevails in thrilling fashion

SEVEN SPRINGS - Spring Creek launched its 2021 baseball campaign with a dramatic, 9-8 victory over East Central 2A rival East Duplin on Tuesday evening.

Tied at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh, Andrew Crumpler reached base on a two-out walk. Robert Strickland moved Crumpler into scoring position with a two-strike single.

East Duplin pitcher Jordan Bond issued a free pass to David Williams, which loaded the bases to create a force out at any base.

But Bond threw a wild pitch to the Gators’ next batter, Douglas Davidson, and Crumpler raced home to seal the win.

Will Ervin paced the Gator’ offense with three hits. Crumpler (two RBI) and Strickland (RBI) each delivered two hits. Lenoir Community College signee Campbell Cunningham and Cole Honeycutt each registered one hit.

Cunningham worked four innings on the bump. The right-hander gave up five runs (one earned) on six hits and posted three strikeouts.

Williams tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief, while Ervin claimed the mound win. The duo combined for five hits and three strikeouts.

The teams meet again Thursday in Beulaville.
