Sandra Jones Sasser, at the age of 74, passed away quietly late Thursday night, Oct. 14, 2021.
Sandra was born in Newport News, Virginia and spent most of her younger years and her adulthood in the Mount Olive area of Wayne County. She graduated from Mount Olive High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University.
With an eye for exactness and attention for precise detail, she was a high school social studies teacher for 25 years at Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston. She taught U.S. History, American Studies, Advanced Placement U.S. History, Economics, European Studies, and Advanced Placement Government. In 1983, she became the advisor of the National Beta Club and served as its advisor until her retirement in 2003.
For eight years in the summer, she traveled to San Antonio, Texas and served as a reader for the National Advanced Placement U.S. History exams. In 1991, she was elected as chairperson of the first accreditation committee for membership in the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. Under her leadership, Parrott Academy gained membership, placing the academy at a higher educational level.
In 1993, she received the first Annie Belle Edwards Hobgood Distinguished Faculty Award at Parrott. In 2015, she was inducted into the prestigious Magnolia Circle at the academy. This award is presented to those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the academy’s growth and success.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Paul L. Sasser; their son, Alexander “Alex” L. Sasser and his wife, Meredith, of Wilmington; her 102-year-old mother, Hilda Oates Jones, of Mount Olive; twin grandsons, Jake Kirkpatrick of Rocky Point, and Cody Kirkpatrick of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two sisters, Glenda J. Lane of Goldsboro, and Gail J. Connell and husband, Dan, of Morehead City; and several nieces and nephews.
Sandra’s father, Eddis Jones, preceded her in death.
A service to honor Sandra’s life was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 U.S. Highway 117 S., Goldsboro. Memorial gifts may be made to Arendell Parrott Academy, Sandra Sasser Memorial Scholarship, P. O. Box 1297, Kinston, NC 28503.
