Saints matmen grapple with Smithfield-Selma

DUDLEY - Southern Wayne’s Damien Carmack hadn’t wrestled in nearly two months.

He didn’t anticipate any “live” mat time Wednesday evening after he twisted an ankle in practice Tuesday.

Saints head coach Antorio King encouraged the 220-pounder to “test” the injury.

Carmack decided to give it a go.

Once the whistle blew and Carmack found himself in a little trouble, he kept Smithfield-Selma’s Daniel May in check. May turned the wrong way on a move, Carmack notched the takedown and then posted a 40-second pin.

“He’s been working on his shot and a move where he grabbed the guy’s elbow and dumped him over, got up…very proud of what he did tonight,” said King.

The Saints claimed a 48-30 win over the Spartans.

The Quad County 3A rivals combined to yield nine forfeits and wrestle just five contested matches.

“It’s been nearly four weeks since we’ve wrestled and in between that time, we’ve been dealing with a lot of injuries, sicknesses and people out of town for the holidays, so we had a very different lineup for tonight,” King said.

“The guys stepped up, did what they were supposed to do and pulled out a win.”

Down 6-0 after the first individual bout, the Saints’ Jay-Sheen Boyd notched a second-period fall over the Spartans’ Jamori Mayo-Richardson at 145 pounds.

A series of forfeits were wrapped around individual victories secured by Carmack and the Spartans’ duo of John Renfrow (160) and Hector Rivera (120). Renfrow surrendered a late penalty point for stalling against the Saints’ Josh Kearney, but eventually earned a pin before time expired.

Caleb Shaw, Wadshon Pierre-Louis, Amari Faison, Joseph Evans, Josiah Bell and Oswaldo Quiroz each picked up forfeit for Southern Wayne.

“We’re going to get back to practice in the wrestling room, get back to working hard like we’re supposed to do,” King said. “I’m proud of this group of guys. We’re turning the corner.”

Southern Wayne (4-3 overall, 3-1 QCC) returns home Jan. 13 for a twi-meet against Fike and North Johnston.
