Rebels take 2 from Hobbton

CALYPSO - Jeff Byrd doesn’t expect North Duplin to score any “style” points or paint a Picasso masterpiece on the hardwood this season.

He’d prefer stick-drawn doodles in the dirt, instead.

“We try to make games ugly,” Byrd said. “I know it sounds silly, but we change defenses so much [and] if you try to make it ugly and get them guessing…

“They were kind of out of whack a little bit.”

The Rebels used the Wildcats’ miscues as fuel for a 41-33 victory in Carolina 1A Conference action Tuesday evening. Sophomore DuJuan Armwood scored 15 points and dished out three fourth-quarter assists for North Duplin, which leveled its league record at 2-2.

Armwood’s brother, Donovan, tallied 13 points.

North Duplin (6-10 overall) kept either a two- or three-possession lead throughout the second half despite experiencing lengthy scoring droughts.

Hobbton obliged with some offensive troubles of its own.

“I think we definitely played good defense…got in their face a little bit,” Byrd said. “[And] offensively, I thought this is the best we’ve played [this season]. We didn’t score but 41 points, but we actually moved the ball and shared the ball.

“Ever since Lakewood beat us on that buzzer beater, we’ve started playing better…had a little more chemistry.”

The Wildcats closed the gap to 33-27 with 5:25 left in regulation.

Two minutes later, the Rebels led 39-29.

Levi George finished with eight points for North Duplin, which is 9-16 against Hobbton since 2008.

Girls

Tateyawan Faison posted a double-double - 19 points, 15 rebounds - as North Duplin hammered Hobbton, 54-14.

Freshman Addy Higginbotham provided 15 points and doled out three assist for the Rebels, who improved to 12-1 overall and 3-1 against conference opposition this season.

Reece Outlaw stuffed her stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Starr Jaco provided three assists and four steals, while Meghan Martin pulled down six rebounds.

North Duplin used runs of 13-0 and 26-0 to put away the Wildcats.
