PREP ROUNDUP: Cunningham blanks Tigers

WARSAW - Campbell Cunningham hurled a complete-game, three-hitter as Spring Creek blanked James Kenan, 2-0, in an East Central 2A baseball contest Tuesday evening.

The Gators halted a four-game skid.

Cunningham issued a walk and posted a strikeout. Just three Tigers - Manny Bostic, George Garner (walk) and Hayden McGee (3-for-3) - reached base in the seven-inning affair.

A right-hander, Cunningham retired Kenan in order in the second, fifth and seventh innings. He sat down 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.

Spring Creek (4-7 overall, 4-7 EC) gave Cunningham a two-run cushion in the third inning.

Will Ervin, Jackson Lewis and Andrew Crumpler each reached on an error. Ervin raced home on Cole Honeycutt’s fielder’s choice and Lewis scored on Robert Strickland’s groundout to second base.

The teams square off Thursday at “The Swamp.” Game time is 5 p.m.

Wall collects lone RBI

GREENVILLE - Senior Josh Wall provided the lone RBI and Southern Wayne scratched out four hits overall during an 11-1 loss to J.H. Rose in an Eastern Carolina 3A-4A baseball game Tuesday.

Wall (1-for-3) plated the Saints’ only run in the third inning.

Fellow senior Carson Daly, sophomore Richard Noble and freshman Drew Sweet contributed one hit apiece.

Will Pennington, senior Wyatt Womble and Alex Davis combined to allow 11 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and six walks. Womble retired three Rose batters on strikeouts. Pennington had two strikeouts, while Davis logged one.

The teams meet again Thursday in Dudley.
