Duplin County authorities continue to investigate a shooting that left a wounded suspect in critical condition.
On Dec. 25, the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Rose Hill after a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, the responding deputy met with the victim and then encountered 84-year-old Jimmy Bland, of 659 Stocking Road in Rose Hill.
Bland was armed with a rifle and had reportedly shot at his neighbor’s house.
The deputy said he instructed Bland to put down the rifle, but Bland pointed the rifle at the deputy and refused to lower it. The deputy shot Bland, who was airlifted to Vidant in Greenville.
DCSO officials said the deputy is on paid administrative leave while the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) reviews the incident. Sheriff Blake Wallace and district attorney Ernie Lee requested the SBI’s assistance.
