Impaired driver almost hits cop, reports show
From staff reports
A Mount Olive police officer’s near miss with a passing car led to a traffic stop and driving impairment charges on Halloween.
Officer Austin Kornegay pulled over a vehicle in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 117 when he said he observed another vehicle that failed to move over and almost strike him.
Kornegay concluded his original traffic stop and pursued the vehicle reportedly driven by 40-year-old Jamel Kareem Carter, 126 Lees Country Club Road, Mount Olive. The officer stopped Carter in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 117 and determined he was driving while impaired, according to an arrest report.
Carter also had a suspended license.
Kornegay charged Carter with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license and failure to move over. He was booked under a $7,500 secured bond from the Wayne County Magistrate’s Office.
