Diplomacy not an option

A few thoughts….

Just how long will town officials continue to let an absentee property owner stand in the way of the South Church Street sidewalk project?

Diplomacy is certainly an admirable approach to resolving a difference, but there does come a time when enough is enough.

The property owner referred to lives out of state, and had requested a delay until she could visit during the holidays and get an on-site look at the problem.

The problem remains simple - the town needs an easement that would clear the way for the first phase of a three year sidewalk project.

The holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year - came and still not a peep from the property owner.

Even a phone call would have shown good faith.

No need to suggest that she did something, but it would not be surprising if town commissioners don’t say it and say it bluntly.

It appears the time for diplomacy is over, and the next step is condemnation.

While on this subject, the condemnation proceedings on two downtown historic structures - the old Krafts building on James Street and the former Center Street Theatre - need resolving instead of continuing delays.

It is an issue slated for the town board of commissioners’ meeting in January.

We will stay away from messing with what should and what should not be printed in a community newspaper.

Instead of worrying about a pot, town commissioners need to stay out of the kitchen if they plan not to do any cooking.

Diplomacy is good and making the right decision is good, but isn’t enough enough?

Hopefully, the town board will kick off the New Year with going ahead and resolve this thorn in the side issue before it is too late.

I hope as we go into the New Year, we all will make that move to benefit each of us, and it is imperative that this newspaper make sure that happens by reporting the news as it is, not as some would like.
