CAMP LEJEUNE — The North Duplin girls’ basketball team launched the Jon Kornegay coaching era in dominant fashion Tuesday evening.
One of four players to reach double-figure scoring, Tateyawna Faison posted a double-double during the Rebels; 64-29, season-opening conquest of Lejeune High School.
A senior center, Faison dropped in 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive side. She picked the Devilpups for three steals and doled out two assists.
Addy Higginbotham provided a team-high 18 points. The recent Wingate University softball signee also supplied five rebounds, six assists and steals.
Lilly Fulghum contributed 11 points, two rebounds, one assist and three steals. Freshman Abby Rose logged 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and three steals.
Sophomore Tristyn Blust, freshman Camden Cox, freshman Maggie Brown and sophomore Abigeal Norris Brown scratched for two points apiece.
The Rebels outscored the Devilpups 22-4 in the opening quarter and permitted just one point in the third quarter. They recorded 32 rebounds, dished out 15 assists on 29 made field goals and collected 17 steals as a team.
North Duplin (1-0 overall) extended its win streak to nine over Lejeune, which remained winless in three outings this season.
Kornegay takes his team to “The Swamp” on Thursday for a non-conference encounter against Spring Creek. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
