The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team collected its first-ever overall Conference Carolinas Regular-Season Championship with a 2-1 victory over Limestone College in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon in Gaffney, South Carolina. The championship is the first overall in program history and second including divisional titles, last won in 2011, and secures the Trojans the No. 1 seed in the Conference Carolinas Championship.
The Trojans fought hard to get on the scoreboard first and were able to do so when Sara Berglund found Ashley Lindsey in the 19th minute on a failed clearance from the Saints on a corner kick. A Limestone foul created a chance for Shaunalee Govia to put a ball in the box in the 38th minute. Govia struck the ball and blasted a high looping shot that went better than in the box — it went over top of the keepers’ hands and into the back of the net to give UMO a 2-0 lead.
Following the halftime break, Limestone answered with a score in the 83rd minute. The goal was the final shot registered by the Saints as the Trojans shut down the remainder of the game and sealed the win.
Mount Olive was led by Govia who had the game-winning goal with her only shot on the day.
Taylor Lewis (10-0-3, 9-0-2) in the game recorded eight saves on nine shots.
Limestone was led by Emma Hickson who scored the sole goal for the Saints.
“Words cannot describe what we are feeling as a team right now,” said UMO head coach Sharif Saber. “Watching the joy in my players’ eyes as they celebrated tonight was one of the proudest and happiest moments of my career. This is a special group of young women who have an exceptional bond. I cannot wait to see what else they accomplish this year.”
