Wise, Melchar pace Gators in winter track meet


GOLDSBORO - Spring Creek’s Dustin Wise and Maria Melchar combined to win three individual events during a multi-team winter track meet contested at Eastern Wayne High School.

On the boys’ side, the Gators compiled 50 team points and finished runners-up to J.H. Rose. Neuse Six 2A foes Princeton and Eastern Wayne ended up third and fourth, respectively, followed by Farmville Central.

Wise emerged victorious in the 1,600-meter run (5 minutes, 25.7 seconds) and 3,200 (14:01.54). He placed second in the 1,000.

Teammates Noah Coleman-Kelly and Eric Mota-Salas each posted a top-10 time in the 300. Coleman-Kelly collected third in the 500. Anthony Pablo placed second in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600.

The Gators won the 4x4 relay in 5 minutes, 30.2 seconds. They took second in the 4x8 and third in the 4x2. 

Melchar secured the 3,200 in 16:59.4. She ended up third in the long jump (12 feet, 7 inches), fourth in the 300 (49.4) and 10th in the 55-meter dash (8.3).
