Wilmington man dies in standoff

CALYPSO — A Wilmington man is dead after a standoff with the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office Response Team on May 9.

According to a report, deputies received a call about a breaking and entering and said the investigation led them to a possible kidnapping.

Jonathan Carter, 27, of 5002 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, entered the residence on the 200 block of East Trade Street and held the occupant against his will for several day, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The occupant managed to escape and call 911.

Carter barricaded himself inside the residence and threatened law enforcement, according to a release from DCSO.

A standoff took place for several hours.

The Special Response Team made entry into the residence and shot Carter, who died at the scene, deputies say.

Sheriff Blake Wallace and District Attorney Ernie Lee requested an inquiry, which has been initiated by the NC State Bureau of Investigation.
