Wayne County Sheriff's deputy in serious, but stable condition


Wayne County Sheriff Deputy Matt Marino is in serious, but stable condition after being involved in a two-car accident on Wednesday evening.

According to a report, Deputy Marino responded to a call for assistance when he was involved in a car crash at the intersection of Sleepy Creek and Ruskin roads at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Deputy Marino was taken to WayneUNC Health Care for treatment and later transferred to Vidant Medical in Greenville.

Three other individuals in the vehicle which struck Deputy Marino were also seriously injured.

First responders from Dudley Volunteer Fire Department, Arrington Volunteer Fire Department, Wayne County EMS, Wayne County Sheriffs and the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the accident.

Authorities shut down Sleepy Creek and Ruskin until the scene was cleared.

The NCSHP continues to investigate the accident.
