UMO’s literary magazine releases spring 2019 edition

The University of Mount Olive Department of English has released the spring edition of its online literary magazine, The Olive Press. This edition contains poems, flash, essays, and short stories. All totaled, there are 16 works in the seventh online edition.

Contributing writer Carrah Faircloth, director of the UMO Writing Center said, “I’m always excited and honored to have my work published in The Olive Press!”

Ms. Faircloth’s piece, “Once, When I Was with the Band,” explores music and love in the city of Boston.

Contributor Geoff Martin, a writer and educator from Massachusetts, submitted a gardening-themed piece titled, “Somehow, Potatoes.”

“The thing with writing, as with gardening, is that it’s mostly a waiting game,” Mr. Martin explained. “You wait for draft work to grow a bit, you wait for rain, you wait for occasional acceptances to come your way. A year and a half later, and after a handful of rejections, I’m so grateful that The Olive Press offered to cellar my potato piece in its seventh online edition.”

Edited by students in the English Department, The Olive Press can be found at Submissions for the fall issue are currently being accepted until April 15. All submissions are welcome. For more information, please contact Rachel McCullen at
