A University of Mount Olive student-athlete has been formerly charged in a deadly car crash that claimed four lives on March 13.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Tiffany Lee of Gambrills, MD, turned herself into authorities on Wednesday afternoon. Lee was booked at the Wayne County Detention Center and placed under a $100,000 bond.
Lee is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of felony assault with serious injury, failure to stop at a duly erected stop sign, driving after consuming alcohol under the age of 21 and overloaded vehicle (with passengers).
A tractor-trailer collided with Lee at the intersection of Highway 55 and Indian Springs Road. Madison Mergi of Sayville, NY and Ann Wray of Oakland, NJ died at the scene. Jett Swetland from Sparta, OH and Chaney Patrich of Chapin, SC, were taken to Vidant Greenville and each later perished from injuries sustained in the crash.
Lee, Mergi, Wray and Patrich all played on the UMO women's lacrosse team that was undefeated and ranked nationally at the time.
Swetland was a former Trojan baseball player.
