Two Trojans receive league honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Two University of Mount Olive student-athletes, Jordan Shughrue and Trent Joiner, have been named Conference Carolinas athletes-of-the-week in their respective sports.

Shughrue tallied six first-half goals as the No. 19-ranked Trojans easily defeated Edinboro University, 19-4, in a non-conference women’s lacrosse contest. The junior attacker from Laurel, Maryland, also collected one ground ball.

She boosted her season totals to 20 goals and one assist.

UMO improved to 7-0 in a season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.

Joiner earned pitcher-of-the-week honors in baseball after he helped the nationally-ranked Trojans complete a two-game sweep of Dominican (New York) College, 3-1.

A senior from Huntersville, the left-hander allowed one run, two walks and retired seven Chargers on strikeouts in six innings of work. It was Joiner’s first victory of the season.

The Trojans concluded the year 19-4.
