A collision between a Jeep SUV and tractor-trailer on N.C. Highway 55 resulted in the deaths of an 18-year old and 20-year old on the night of Tuesday, Sept 3.
An SUV traveling east on N.C. 55 reportedly crossed the center line into the path of a tractor-trailer that was heading westbound near Thunder Swamp Road in Mount Olive around 8:40 p.m.
Eighteen-year-old Colby Rayne Bernard and 20-year-old Nathan Hayes Toler of Hobucken were killed in the crash. Toler and Bernard were in the SUV.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as 63-year-old Jeffrey Guy Matthews of LaGrange. Matthews was checked out and suffered minor injuries, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
State Highway Patrol Trooper Sgt. L.J. Bunn said he was unaware of any additional factors that may have caused the wreck. The crash remains under investigation.
