Trojan Beat: Men's volleyball takes 5-set thriller

Tobi Azeez delivered a monster kill on match point as University of Mount Olive dispatched rival Barton 25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12 in a pivotal Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball match Wednesday evening.

The Trojans (6-1 overall) halted a frustrating 10-game skid against the Bulldogs and seized sole possession of the league lead at 5-1.

Azeez’s kill off of Ferguson’s assist gave UMO a 13-9 lead in set five.

Barton closed to within 13-12 before Ferguson gave the Trojans set and match point at 14-12 off of an Azeez assist.

Azeez polished off the five-set thriller with his 20th kill of the night. He collected 13 digs defensively and served three of the team’s eight aces.

Ethan Morales supplied a double-double - 25 assists, 13 digs. Ferguson stuffed his stat sheet with 11 kills and nine assists.

Though Barton led 69-49 in kills, the Trojans held the advantage in aces (8-3) and blocks (11-5).

UMO is the guest of Emmanuel on Friday and visits Erskine on Saturday.

Softball

UMO shut out another Division III opponent on the diamond Wednesday afternoon.

The Trojans swept William Peace University 8-0 and 11-0.

In the opener, Hailey Kessinger tossed a three-hitter and logged three strikeouts in the mercy-rule win.

Courtlynn Cooney batted 2-for-3. Kylie Emanuele went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Cana Shrock and Ashley Mick combined for three RBI.

Emma Mooney and Madison Morgan each stole two bases.

In game two, Hannah Killough mashed a fourth-inning grand slam and ended the night 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Mooney (two RBI), Cooney (two RBI) and Shrock (RBI) contributed two hits apiece.

Mallory Ratliff threw a complete-game two-hitter and retired six WPU hitters on strikeouts.

The Trojans (5-3 overall) put their four-game win streak on the line March 7 against Peach Belt power North Georgia University. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.

Men’s golf

DADE CITY, Fla. - University of Mount Olive’s Patrick Schweitz tied for 43rd overall individually with a three-day 3-over-par 219 during the St. Leo Invitational contested at Lake Javita Golf and Country Club.

Schweitz logged a 1-under-par during the first round.

Ruben van der Berg posted a 222. Olle Ryberg (224), Brice Ballin (225) and Cade Hancock (229) rounded out the Trojans’ team score.

UMO finished 15th among 18 teams with a 22-over-par 886.

The three-day, 54-hole event included 15 schools ranked among the latest Golfstat Division II national poll.
