An outburst of heavy rainfall caused another sewage spill at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
The incident occurred last Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning.
Town Manager Jammie Royall said the 1.6 inches of rain that fell within a 60-minute span overwhelmed the plant’s system. Approximately 270,000 gallons of raw sewage overflowed into the nearby headwaters of the Northeast Cape Fear River.
The plant has spilled nearly two million gallons of raw sewage into the river within the past the month.
Royall said state authorities were notified, as required by law.
