Sidewalk flooding near school scheduled to be repaired

Work is expected to begin on April 21 to remedy sidewalk flooding on the north side of the 500 and 600 blocks of West John Street.

It is an issue that surfaced under commissioner comments at last week’s monthly meeting of the Mount Olive Town Board of Commissioners.

District Four Commissioner Dennis Draper raised the issue and said he has fielded residents’ concerns.

He said sidewalks along the two-block stretch flood during heavy rain, and youngsters who have to walk to nearby Mount Olive Middle School are forced to either walk through the water or walk in the street. He said it is a safety issue.

Town Manager Charles Brown was unable to attend the board meeting, but the following day told the Tribune there is already a work order in place to correct the problem.

The problem is due to a crown in the street that causes water to run to the north side of the street. Brown said it will require installation of a new drain line to move the water. Brown said the work will take several days and had to b e scheduled when school is not in session.

The scheduled date is when school is shut down for spring break, Brown said.
