She throws, works, serves and has high grades to boot

The Scholarship & Awards Committee of North Duplin Junior/Senior High School recently announced that Rose Mary Martinez is the December Student of the Month for the Mount Olive Exchange Club and Duplin Rotary Club. Rose is a senior at North Duplin and is the daughter of Esbeida Martinez and Oscar Ramirez of Calypso.

Rose was HOSA vice president in her junior year and carries the position into her senior year of high school. Rose is also a member of the Beta Club, SADD Club, Art Club and Student Council. She has also participated in track and field as a discus thrower all four years of high school.

Rose assists in a group at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, called St. Vincent de Paul. She also visits the Mount Olive Nursing Home. Rose enjoys attending her youth group meetings and manages to participate in these activities while juggling school work to maintain her honor roll grades, working part-time and preserving her relationships with her friends.

When asked who she would invite anyone to dinner, past or present, she answered “Mother Teresa. She left her whole life behind to help those in need and could care less what people thought of her. She knew what she was doing was right.”

Rose’s mother is the person she most looks up to, for teaching her about resilience and bringing her up to be the person she is today.

Her favorite quote is “A few months of hardcore focus can put you 5 years ahead. Don’t underestimate the power of consistency. Grind it out and exceed expectations!”

Following graduation, Rose plans to attend community college to obtain her EMS certification and eventually work her way up to becoming a nurse practitioner.
