Saints drop both games on the diamond to the Vikings

Southern Wayne's baseball team is still on the look for their first win of the season after they dropped an 8-2 contest against D.H. Conley yesterday. The Lady Saints have hit a bump in the road as they dropped their second game in the row, losing 6-0 last night to D.H. Conley.

Sporting their home blue jerseys, the Saints sat at 0-8 before their game yesterday and seemed optimistic that they could finally get into the win column. D.H. Conley sporting a throwback look got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Saints were unable to answer in the bottom half and the Vikings capitalized on another scoring opportunity in the top of the second to hold a 3-0 lead after three full innings.

The fourth inning was an eventful one for both teams; three runs were scored by D.H. Conley to make their lead 6-0, but Southern Wayne would get two runs of their own in the bottom half getting an RBI from senior Justin Edwards to reduce the Vikings lead to 6-2.

The bats would go quiet for both squads over the next two innings and in the seventh inning, the Vikings would add two more runs to their total. The Saints were unable to mount up a comeback in the bottom half resulting in an 8-2 loss, their ninth of the season.

Junior Matt Kornegay had the most hits for the Saints going 2-for-4 and he was one of the runs to come across for Southern Wayne. Justin Edwards was credited with the only RBI in the ballgame for the Saints, his fifth of the season.

Coming off a loss against the rival Falcons of C.B. Aycock, the Lady Saints were motivated to right their wrongs against D.H. Conley, but things just didn't go their way throughout the ballgame.

The Vikings scored a quick run in the first inning, but neither team would get a run across over the next three innings. Trailing 1-0, the Saints would give up another run in the top of the fourth and fifth innings allowing the Vikings to build a 3-0 lead.

Totaling only two hits throughout the entire game, the Saints' bats were unable to get anything going against the D.H. Conley pitching staff. The Lady Vikings would tack on another run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh ultimately giving them a 6-0 win over the Lady Saints. The loss put Southern Wayne's record to 5-4 on the season after two straight losses.

Freshman Layla Rackley and sophomore Abbey Parker picked up the only two hits for Southern Wayne in the ballgame. Senior Dawn Anderson was credited with the loss moving her record to 4-1 on the season.

The Saints will be in action again on Tuesday when both teams face off against the rival Eastern Wayne Warriors.
