Mount Olive officials said the N.C. Department of Transportation is responsible for mowing grass along a state-maintained highway in town.
Jammie Royall, town manager, said it’s a stretch of North Center Street’s east side from Park Avenue north to Talton Drive.
“Earlier, district DOT officials explained their mowers were down and we helped them out because we have a good relationship with them,” Royall said.
The town handled the mowing due to resident complaints.
The grassy area has grown again and Royall said he plans to contact NCDOT about the situation.
Grass-cutting season is over.
Town employees mowed private lots and billed the property owners for it this year. If the bill is not paid, a lien will be taken out against the property. The town is also involved in a state program that withholds tax returns for people who owe municipal debts.
Royall said he has not seen the town’s expense report for cutting the lots.
