DUDLEY - A repeat trip to the playoffs is not possible for Southern Wayne in girls' basketball.
Athletics director David Lee said Wednesday morning the season is over after Kinston, which visited Dudley last Friday, reported a positive COVID-19 test on its team. Wayne County rules state a team must quarantine for 10 days.
Southern Wayne (6-6 overall) entered the week 5-5 in Eastern Carolina 3A-4A Conference play. The Saints trailed county rival Charles B. Aycock (6-5 ECC) by one-half game in the league standings.
"This much eliminates us from a shot at a wild-card playoff berth," said Lee. "The coaches and players are disappointed as they had just played an outstanding game against Kinston last Friday.
"They had a great season where they overcame many obstacles including quarantines and injuries. We are very proud of our Lady Saints."
The NC High School Athletic Association playoffs start Feb. 23.

The Saints are 1-2-0 overall after a 2-1 road win at New Bern.
