Boys’ basketball

* SEVEN SPRINGS - Spring Creek started off in a positive manner against annual East Central 2A powerhouse Clinton on Tuesday evening.

An offensive putback and a silky, running shot in the lane helped the Gators build an early lead that quickly disappeared.

The Dark Horses answered with a monster 20-2 run and eventually galloped to a 69-36 victory in “The Swamp.”

“That’s the best we’ve started out…really were some things that we did better,” said SC head coach Jeff Davis. “We relied on the 3-pointer too much in the first half. We were open on most of them, but with that long, wide zone, we’ve got to get inside of it.

“We didn’t and settled for the three.”

Junior shooting guard Nick Smith nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, which allowed the Dark Horses to break loose from the corral. Senior Keonsha Frink closed the first quarter with an old-fashioned, three-point play after getting fouled on an offensive outback.

Clinton had 17 offensive boards on the night.

Terius Johnson’s 3-pointer off of Kaden Jones’ lone assist ended an eight-minute scoring drought for the Gators, who trailed 26-10 at that point.

Johnson ended the night with 12 points. Teammate Calvin Alphin stuffed his stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Jamill Burrell logged five points, six rebounds and two steals.

 * DUDLEY - Jamaiya Bass and JaMaya Leach each logged a double-double as Southern Wayne edged J.H. Rose, 45-43, in Eastern Carolina 3A-4A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Bass collected 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Leach supplied 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Point guard Ty’Lisha Maye recorded 11 points and picked the Rampants for five steals.

Laci Capri tallied six points.

The Saints (3-2 overall, 3-1 ECC) put their three-game win streak on the line today against county rival Eastern Wayne. Tip-off is 4 p.m.

* SEVEN SPRINGS - Cailyn Shivar drained a 3-pointer during Spring Creek’s 53-10 loss to annual East Central 2A power Clinton on Tuesday evening.

Madison Broughton, Vanessa Duruttya and Carmen Montoya each scored two points for the Gators. Ann Howard added a free throw.
