PREP ROUNDUP: Saints prevail on soccer pitch; Gators, Rebels advance in volleyball tournament action

FOUR OAKS - Alex Aldana posted a hat trick (three goals) and an assist during Southern Wayne’s 9-0 romp over South Johnston in a Quad County 3A boys’ soccer game Monday evening.

Alex Marquez provided two goals. Cesar Espinoza (one assist), Damas Jean, Gavin Simons (one assist) and Miguel Campuzano delivered one goal apiece.

Drew Bryan dished out two assists, while Noah Barrett had one assist.

SW goalie Joey Segura recorded six saves between the pipes.

The Saints (8-6-0 overall, 4-6-0 QCC) travel to Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday and entertain South Johnston on Thursday.

Gators advance

KENLY - Fourth-seeded Spring Creek advanced to semifinal-round play in the Neuse Six 2A volleyball tournament with a 25-18, 15-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11 triumph over Eastern Wayne on Monday.

The Gators beat the Warriors for the third time this season.

“Our girls played well the first set, but lost focus,” Gators head coach Jannah Marriner said. “Our serves were the big issue as we had 19 missed serves. I told them at the beginning of the fourth set that they can win, but have to want to win and play smarter.”

Sophomore Emily Williams dished out 13 assists, served four aces and collected a team-leading eight digs defensively. Yaeli Espinosa contributed nine kills and one ace.

Freshman middle hitter Heather Alexander recorded seven kills, two aces and one block. Gabby Sutton had one kill, one ace and five digs. Sarah Hess supplied one kill, one ace, five blocks and four digs.

Cailyn Shivar registered five digs. Peyton Sullivan had one kill, two assists, six aces and five digs.

Spring Creek (7-13) travels to Princeton today. Game time is 6 p.m. and admission is $7.

Rebels prevail

SALEMBURG - North Duplin logged a season-best .359 hitting percentage and upended Union 22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 15-9 in quarterfinal-round play of the Carolina 1A volleyball tournament Monday.

The Rebels collected 30-plus kills as a team for the second straight match and tied a season-low for hitting errors (7).

Reece Outlaw cranked out a team-high 12 kills and compiled five digs. Senior middle hitter Morgan McCoy contributed 11 kills, five assists and six blocks.

Addy Higginbotham recorded four kills, seven aces and three digs. Starr Jaco dished out a team-leading 13 assists and had four digs. Logan Jones doled out five assists, while Kasey Jones emerged as the defensive leader with 15 digs.

As a team, the Rebels compiled 17 aces, 35 digs and 21 assists. They avenged a regular-season sweep against the Spartans.

North Duplin (9-8 overall) faces regular-season champ Neuse Charter today at Lakewood.
