PIKEVILLE — Sheriff’s deputies suspect foul play in the death of a pregnant woman whose body was found in a wrecked car Jan. 29.

On Friday, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 29-year-old Cassia Renee Duval.

“Miss Duval at the time was pregnant and the fetus did not survive,” sheriff’s Maj. Richard Lewis said in a news release.

Lewis said Duval’s death is classified as a homicide. While no arrests had been made Friday evening, authorities don’t believe anyone else is at risk.

“As concerning as this case is, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office wants to inform the citizens living in this area that there is no concern for their safety dealing with this investigation,” Lewis said.

Deputies were called to a report of a woman slumped over in a vehicle near the intersection of Pikeville-Princeton Road and Nahunta Road west of Pikeville around 11:16 p.m. Jan. 29. Dispatchers updated the call to a vehicle crash while deputies were en route to the scene.

The vehicle was located in a ditch near the intersection and deputies found a young woman later identified as Duval who was deceased at the scene, Lewis said.

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death. Lewis said the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner provided investigators with a preliminary autopsy report.

“Due to the sensitivity of this case/investigation, no further information is being released at this time,” Lewis said in the Friday release.

Anyone with information can call the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481.
