Perez, Velasquez lead Southern Wayne


NEW BERN - Southern Wayne’s tandem of Edwin Perez and Jose Velasquez finished second and fourth, respectively, during their season-opening Eastern Carolina 3A-4A cross country meet at New Bern on Wednesday afternoon.

Perez ran the 5k (3.1-mile) course in 19 minutes, 5 seconds.

Velasquez broke the tape in 19:13.

Teammates Ryan Norton (20:48, 12th), Carson Daly (23:29, 14th) and Carson Wise (24:21, 17th) helped the Saints place second in the three-team meet with 46 points.

Randy Rojas, Remy Whitley and Lehy St. Julian also participated for Southern Wayne.

D.H. Conley won the meet with 22 points.

On the girls’ side, the Saints’ Xilmara Soler and Lehyssa St. Julian competed among 16 runners. Soler ended up 13th in 28:24, while St. Julian took 15th in 28:55.
