New SRO chief in the house

Veteran Wayne County Schools Resources Officer Lt. William Kates has been promoted to the rank of captain in the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Kates now heads up the department’s SRO Division of 19 full- and part time officers assigned to schools around the county.

The promotion came during a recent badge presentation and promotion ceremony y held by Sheriff Larry Pierce.

The sheriff noted during the ceremony that Capt. Kates has spent the majority of his years with the department as a schools resources officer, and has moved through the depart-mental ranks.

Capt. Kates will now command four supervisors who oversee the daily operations of the division.

The promotion also makes Capt. Kates a member of the sheriff’s command staff, which consists of the sheriff, major of enforcement, major of detention/civil, captain of the civil division, captain of the detective division, captain of the patrol division, captain of support services and captain of detention.

His duties now as a member of the department’s command staff mean he will be involved in personnel and budget decisions.
