More than 637,000 gallons of untreated sewage from Mount Olive escaped into the Northeast Cape Fear River over a span of 9 hours Monday.
Mount Olive had a discharge of untreated sewer from inside the town’s wastewater treatment plant at 408 Wilkins Farm Road of approximately 637,500 gallons, according to a release from the town.
The spill was discovered at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, June 10, and was immediately stopped, according to town officials. Upon review, Wastewater Treatment Plant staff realized the spill had lasted 9 hours due to multiple equipment and SCADA System failures.
The spill originally started at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, the release stated. The untreated waste entered the headwaters of the Northeast Cape Fear River. The spill occurred as a result of the multiple equipment and SCADA System failures.
