The Mount Olive Municipal Airport is next in line for an automated weather observation station (AWOS).
The new $150,000 project will be financed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Aviation. DOT only takes on one such project a year and Mount Olive is next on its long to-do list, according to local officials.
Pilots have requested the system at the local airport more than once.
Town Manager Charles Brown said state authorities actually install and maintain the AWOS.
Both federal and state authorities look at it as a safety issue, Brown said.
The project is scheduled to begin during the next Aviation Division budget year, which starts in October, he added.
The weather station, Brown said, is a tremendous aid to pilots flying at night or in bad weather. But the actual operation of the AWOS system is still probably about a year away.
