Kermode swats three homers, Jets sweep Redbirds


AHOSKIE - Case Kermode went “yard” on three occasions and Tanner Capps added a “touch-‘em-all” shot of his own as the Wayne County Jets swept the Twin River Redbirds 9-8 and 13-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Kermode stroked a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence that plated teammate Sam Rice, who walked, in the first inning of game one.

In the nightcap, Capps belted a two-run shot in the second inning that scored teammate Will Harris. Kermode deposited solo blasts to nearly the same spot in each of the third and fifth innings.

Wayne County has five homers as a team this season.

Will Albert capped the Jets’ win the opener with an eighth-inning, two-out single that brought home Logan Merritt. Merritt connected on a lead-off double, stole third and trotted home on Albert’s knock.

Anderson Clucas earned the mound victory with 2 1/3 innings of four-strikeout relief.

The Jets pushed erupted with four-run outbursts in the fifth and seventh innings of game two. Seven starters and two reserves combined for 17 hits on the Hertford County HS diamond.

Capps and Carson Gipson each batted 3-for-4 and combined for five RBI.

Braeden Collins started on the bump and claimed the decision with three innings of no-hit work. He struck out four, issued four free passes and yielded an earned run.

The Jets (9-1 overall) return home today against Cary. Game time is 8 p.m. at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park.

WC Blue faces the Garner Stars at 5:45 p.m.
