SEVEN SPRINGS - Taylor Jones won’t forget his return to “The Swamp” anytime soon.
The former Spring Creek boys’ basketball coach for 13 years and now at James Kenan, Taylor watched his Tigers secure a share of the East Central 2A Conference crown in dominating fashion Monday evening.
Senior guard Kavell Donaldson torched the nets for 39 points in an 87-49 romp over the Gators.
Kenan (10-2 overall, 10-2 East Central) presented Taylor his third league championship overall. Taylor collected a pair of Carolina 1A titles while at Spring Creek.
The Gators stayed within striking distance throughout the opening half. However, the Tigers posted 28 third-quarter points and rolled to their fourth consecutive win.
Kaden Jones and TJ Wilson (six rebounds) paced Spring Creek’s offensive attack with 14 points apiece. Jamil Burrell contributed nine points and five rebounds.
Lucas Barfield logged six rebounds.
Spring Creek committed 14 turnovers and shot 8 of 18 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Tigers hit 24 of 35 at the stripe and pulled down 18 offensive rebounds.
Spring Creek shot a season-best 7 of 8 from the free throw line during its 47-20 loss to James Kenan.
Cailyn Shivar emerged as the offensive leader with six points - all from behind the 3-point arc. Ann Howard converted all four free throw attempts and finished with four points.
Madison Broughton and Taleigha Richardson contributed three points apiece. Vanessa Duruttya and Riley Hill each tallied two points.
The Gators outscored the Tigers, 13-10, in the final period.
