Jets' defense costly in loss

Adam Pate has seen ugly defense too many times this season.

It proved costly Thursday evening.

The Wayne County Jets booted the ball around early, fell behind nemesis Kinston and dropped a 5-2 decision at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park on Thursday evening.

Pate’s club endured its third loss of the season.

Clay Matthews (RBI), Logan Merritt and Drew Spencer provided one hit apiece for the Jets.

Tanner McKeel endured the pitching loss. Cal Reese provided 1 1/3 innings of two-strikeout relief. Carson Gipson silenced the Battleship with 4 1/3 innings of two-strikeout, scoreless relief.

Wayne County (11-3) heads to Rocky Mount Academy today for a contest against Wilson. The Jets travel west Saturday for an doubleheader against Randolph County at McCrary Park in Asheboro.
