Thanks to a government holiday, last-minute income fax filers get an extra three days to submit their 2021 return to the Internal Revenue Service.
The traditional deadline is Apr. 15.
Because Emancipation Day, which is celebrated Apr. 16, falls on a Saturday this year, it will officially be observed on the closest weekday - Friday, Apr. 15. All city and federal offices in DC will be closed.
Emancipation Day commemorates the date in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed 3,000 slaves in the DC area.
It has been celebrated in the nation’s capital since 2005.
The tax deadline is Apr. 18 for everyone except residents of Maine and Massachusetts, who must file by Apr. 19 since Apr. 18 is Patriots Day.
Apr. 18 is also the deadline to request an automatic extension for an extra six months to file a return though the payment of taxes remains the same.
