The Wayne County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to appoint Freeman Hardison Jr. to fill the vacant seat in District 4.
Hardison Jr. will serve the remainder of the term left vacant by the passing of Commissioner A. Joe Gurley III.
A native of Newton Grove and graduate of NC A&T State University, Hardison Jr. spent 29 years working in various laboratory leadership roles. In 2013, he retired and now resides in the Grantham community.
He has served on numerous boards - Wayne County Planning Board, Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority (GWTA), Wayne UNC Health Care Board of Directors, Wayne Action Teams for Community Health and Wayne County NC Extension Master Gardeners.
Hardison Jr. will be officially sworn in during the next commissioners' meeting on July 21.
