Garner Nats hand Wayne County loss in ISL tournament

The Wayne County Jets haven’t been able to solve the enigma surrounding the Garner Nationals this season.

Tuesday evening was no exception.

The Nats grounded the Jets 5-1 in the season-ending Independent Summer League tournament contested at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park. Garner, the top seed, defeated Wayne County for the third straight time.

Weather permitting, Wayne County (15-8) faces Wilson in elimination-round play today at 6 p.m. The winner opposes Garner at 8 p.m. in championship-round action.

A second game, if necessary, is scheduled for Thursday.

Cameron Aycock, Tanner Capps, Will Uzzell, Logan Merritt and Will Harris posted one hit apiece in the loss. Harris accounted for the Jets’ lone RBI - a third-inning single that scored Merritt and knotted the game at 1-1.

Garner seized command with four unanswered runs, including three in the bottom half of the third inning.

Tyler Thompson took the mound loss for Wayne County, which is 4-4 overall in its last eight outings. He yielded four runs (three earned) on four hits and retired five Nats on strikeouts in two-plus innings of work.

Adam Brogden, Carter Gipson, Cohen Waddell and Daniel Weeks each made an appearance out of the bullpen. The five hurlers combined for seven strikeouts and no walks.
