Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Hall, 88

MOUNT OLIVE — Mary Elizabeth “Ms. Lib” Barnett Hall passed away on May 14, 2020, at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. She was 88.

Lib was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Barnett and Mary Catherine Mitchell Barnett; her husband, William Franklin “Dub” Hall Sr.; son, William Franklin “Frankie” Hall Jr.; sisters, Hazel Rackley, Lois Price and Rose Kinzel; brother, Ardell Barnett; and granddaughter, Melody Paynter.

She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Virginia Hall Paynter (Donald) of Henderson and Betty Hall Clarke (Bill) of Micro; sister, Ramona Thomas; brother, John “Jay” Barnett; granddaughters, Catherine Shireman and Kelley Deal; stepgrandchildren, Bradley and Faith Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Sarah and Beckett Shireman.

Lib grew up in Duplin County near Albertson and later moved to Bowdens. At a young age, she surrendered her life to the lordship of Jesus Christ. She knew Him as her personal savior and led her children to trust in Him as well.

Dub and Lib married in 1947. Together they instilled in their children the importance of hard work, education, devotion to family, perseverance and independence.

Dub and Lib owned and operated Hall’s Grocery on Breazeale Avenue in Mount Olive. The couple later opened Dub’s Bar-B-Que in Mount Olive, a well-known landmark. The Halls lived to serve their community at the café.

Lib enjoyed time with family at White Lake, playing a friendly game of Bingo or Rummy, gardening, and in her later years, she loved to play bean bag baseball with her friends at Mount Olive Senior Center.

Lib served as a volunteer in her children’s school, as a Lions Club Lioness, and was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Mount Olive.

Graveside services were held Sunday, May 17, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive. Donald Paynter and Jay Barnett presided over the service.
