A gentle breeze and sun-splashed skies welcomed residents of the Mount Olive community who turned out to participate in the inaugural Juneteenth Celebration at Westbrook Park Sunday afternoon. Nicky Fryar sang the Black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice.”
Emmy Award winner Willa Bingham served as the guest speaker.
Bands from around Eastern North Carolina performed toe-tapping music while festival-goers dined on pizza, ice cream and popcorn, and participated in numerous games.
The four-hour event was sponsored by the Mount Olive Chapter of Carver Alumni & Friends Association Inc.
