Calling all gospel singers: State convention starts in June

Categories announced for 2019

Gospel singers, choirs, families and fans will gather under the trees and sunshine at Benson’s Singing Grove for the 99th time next month at the annual State Singing Convention. Organizers are calling all contestants to register.

The convention is set to be held June 21-23 and will feature seven categories, including duets, trios, quartets, families, church choirs, juniors and live accompaniment. Due to time constraints, there will be no solo category.

There will also be no specific bluegrass category this year. Bluegrass gospel groups are encouraged to sing in both the round robin sessions and other competitions.

The contests will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23.

Trophies will be awarded at the end of each competition day. Singers who compete on both days will be eligible for the Grand Champion and the Consolation cups.

The song selection for Sunday must be different from the selection the singers choose for Saturday.

Scores for both days will be used to determine the winners of the Grand Champion and Consolation cups.

All contestants are asked to fill out a registration form in the office at the Singing Grove by 1 p.m. each day. Prospective contestants are asked to call 919-894-4389, fax 919-894-7394 or email or or for more information.

In addition to the competitions, the State Singing Convention will feature live performances by Full Reliance, Sheltered Quartet, Good News Quarter, The Crusaders of NC, The Dunns and the choir from the Benson Church of God on June 21 starting at 7 p.m.

Gerald Wolfe and Greater Vision from Morristown, Tennessee, will perform at 7 p.m. June 22. There will also be a performance by The 3 Heath Brothers, the 2018 Grand Champions, who hail from Thomasville, North Carolina, at 6:15 p.m. that day. The round robin singing and other groups will start the weekend lineups at 10 a.m.

There is no entry fee for contestants and admission is free. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
