BREAKING NEWS: Southern Wayne pauses football, volleyball programs

Southern Wayne athletics director David Lee announced Wednesday afternoon that volleyball matches scheduled for today and Thursday, and both football games have been postponed.

“We are pausing our football and volleyball programs until Monday out of an abundance of caution,” Lee said in a text message to the Tribune. “We have only had one or two on each team test positive, but there is enough of a concern to error on the side of safety.

“We will re-evaluate the situations on Monday.”

The Saints were scheduled to host Quad County 3A volleyball opponents Smithfield-Selma this afternoon and Wilson Fike on Thursday. The SW-SSS game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but postponed due to COVID-19 concerns with officials.

Southern Wayne was slated to launch its inaugural Quad County 3A football campaign against East Wake’s junior varsity and varsity teams Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Lee said no make-up dates have been determined.
