A Mount Olive man is being held in jail under an $800,000 bond after police say he shot and wounded a man on a Franklin Street porch from a moving car.
Mount Olive Police arrested 23-year-old Jeffrey Rishawn Leach Jr., of 121 Pine Forest Road, and charged him with one felony count each of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill resulting in serious injury.
Leach is accused of shooting and injuring 25-year-old Brandon Durham of 492 Kelly Springs Road in a drive-by assault on the afternoon of July 26.
Durham was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred at 230 Franklin St.
Police said the victim called police after being struck in the back and the lower part of his stomach while he was standing on the front porch at the residence.
Investigators said Leach told them he did not know who shot him and that it happened when a silver car drove by.
Police said they uncovered seven casings from a 9 mm weapon.
Police Chief Tommy Brown said other charges could be filed against Leach.
He also told the Tribune that several of the recent shootings may have been connected.
Mount Olive Town Manager Charles Brown complimented police for their investigative work that led to the arrest.
Mayor Joe Scott said police worked “tirelessly and nearly around the clock on the case.”
It was the fifth shooting in Mount Olive in a month.
