A brighter downtown in the works

Downtown Mount Olive is about to become brighter.

Town officials said Duke Progress Energy will put LED lights in 13 utility poles on the 100 and 200 blocks of North Center Street.

“All of the needed paperwork has been signed and the work should be completed within a two-week period,” said interim Town Manager Jammie Royall, who added lights on the 100 block of South Center Street have been replaced.

Once that project is completed, DPE will begin work on the 300 block of South Center Street.

Royall said Duke Progress Energy continues to work on a plan to place video cameras at strategic areas in town. The company has drawn up a proposal where it provides the cameras, handles installation and ensures maintenance. The offer remains under review.

The town would pay a monthly fee.
