Every community should have a newspaper.

Residents need to know what is happening in their towns, what government is doing on their behalf, how schools are faring, what good things are going on around them — and there are many — and, quite frankly, who has died within their midst.

All those things, and many more, are what make a community newspaper a vital cog in the wheel of any town.

That’s why when we, at Champion Media LLC, learned several months back The Mount Olive Tribune was closing its doors we moved into action.

What you see today is the fruit of that labor, mountolivetribune.com, our attempt at resurrecting and revamping the news outlet those in this wonderful community have depended on for its news and information for decades. We start with an online edition, bringing you local news, sports, church events, community briefs, local features, government news, commentary , obituaries and much more.

Please peruse the site, read the stories, watch the sports video, share your own opinions and offer up suggestions on how we can make it better as we go. We ask, too, that you bear with us as we tweak the site to make it more reader friendly over the next few days and weeks.

Our aim is to make this the place you go for all your local news.

We thank the Mount Olive business community for its immediate support of this endeavor and we urge you to shop with them, putting money into local merchants’ pockets, the same pockets from which they continuously pull countless dollars to support civic organizations, school children and church functions.

It is what brings strength to any community.

And we believe it is what will strengthen us as we grow this endeavor for you through our website and our social media like Facebook and Twitter. Follow us on all three, watch for our Instagram page coming soon and let us know how we are doing.

We believe Mount Olive and its surrounding towns — like Calypson, Seven Springs, Beautancus and Faison, among others — is on the cusp of great things and we want to be there promoting those great things for you.
