Pickle Fest planning underway

By William Holloman
Staff Writer

Plans are already underway for the 2017 North Carolina Pickle Festival, and a series of meetings has been scheduled.

Festival chairs Julie Beck and Lynn Williams said monthly planning and update sessions kick off on January 23. The sessions will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Mount Olive Pickle Company board room (same place as last year). Entrance to the conference room is via Witherington Street.

Other sessions are set for February 6, March 6, April 3, April 10, April 17, and (if needed) April 24.

The festival this year kicks off on Friday, April 28 with an opening night downtown concert. The feature entertainment has not yet been announced. The opening night concert has been held at the local airport, but was rained out last year. The venue has been relocated to the downtown area now because the Vidant Care helicopter rescue service is now based at the airport.

Festival hours on Saturday are set for 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., and it all concludes on Sunday with a morning worship service.

The award-winning festival, which will be celebrating its 31st year, is sponsored by the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce. The festival has been recognized by the North and South Carolina Festivals and Events Association.

Chamber President Julie Beck will be making festival announcements over the next few months as they are finalized. The festival draws thousands from across the county, the area, and even across the nation.
A wide variety of new events for the upcoming festival will be announced in the weeks ahead.
